EnquireAbout Us
Global Sourcing Gems and Jewellers is a Colombo-based gem house with a simple purpose: to bring Sri Lanka’s natural coloured stones to the world honestly, fairly and with the care they deserve.
Ratna-dweepa
“Island of Gems” — one of Sri Lanka’s oldest names
Where Our Stones Come From
Long before the word “sapphire” was written in any European language, traders were sailing to this island for its stones. Ancient travellers wrote of rubies and sapphires found in its rivers, and the jewels of royal collections across the world have been traced back to its soil. Its old name, Ratna-dweepa, simply means the Island of Gems.
The gems still come from the same place: the ancient river gravels of Ratnapura, the City of Gems, and the gem-bearing valleys of Elahera, Okkampitiya and beyond. Here, stones are still recovered by hand, by miners who wash the gravel in woven baskets, much as their grandparents did. Few places on earth produce so many varieties, in so many colours, of such consistent beauty.
Our Journey
Global Sourcing commenced business in Colombo in 2006. From the beginning, Sri Lanka’s gemstones held our attention: their history, the craftsmanship of the island’s cutters and the sheer variety of colour that no other place on earth can match.
Today, gems are our entire focus. We are licensed as a gem dealer by the National Gem & Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka, and we spend our days in the gem markets of Ratnapura, Beruwala and Colombo, among people we have come to know and trust. Every stone we offer has passed through our own hands and been examined under our own loupe.
We serve two kinds of client with the same care: the private buyer looking for one special stone, and the jeweller or gem company that needs a reliable partner in Sri Lanka.
What We Stand For
We deal only in natural gemstones of Sri Lankan origin. If a stone has been heated or otherwise treated, we tell you, clearly and before you buy.
Buying where the stones are mined and cut means fairer prices for our clients and a fair return for the miners and cutters we work with.
Colour, clarity, cut and life matter more than size alone. We would rather offer you fewer stones that are genuinely beautiful.
Our memo programme exists because we believe in long relationships with the trade. We want clients who come back, year after year.
